Art About Agriculture is celebrating 40 years! THANK YOU to all artists, venues, and patrons who have made this milestone possible.  We are honored to present this year’s jury-selected artworks from artists representing 20 counties throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.

Established in 1983, Art About Agriculture is a STEAM education program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) that has inspired countless artists throughout the Pacific Northwest to consider food, fiber, and natural resources in their creative practices.  Founded on the idea that art can promote agricultural awareness and appreciation, the Art About Agriculture Permanent Collection can be found on display in public spaces throughout the state.

All artworks in the permanent collection were selected by jury, with the vast majority acquired through the annual competition process and funded by essential donations and endowments.  Please consider donating to Art About Agriculture; all donations directly support art and artists.

Bets earned her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Oregon. She is known for her dramatic large-scale charcoal drawings and her colorful, acrylic and gouache paintings. Bets’s paintings have been selected for many public and private collections which include: The M & T Bank & Investment Group Collection in Baltimore, Maryland, Oregon State University, Umpqua Community College, University of Oregon and for The Adell McMillan and Marathon Coach Collections in Eugene, Oregon. Her work has been showcased in the Governor’s Office in the Capitol Building in Salem, Oregon, and the Art About Agriculture Permanent Collection features three of her paintings: Fall Farm (1994), Grand Farm View (2003), and Dockside (2006).

Shelley Curtis was the Art About Agriculture program’s Directing Curator from 1999 – 2018.  She organized many influential exhibitions and tours, including the 25th anniversary retrospective exhibition at the Oregon Historical Society.  Curtis was the editor of the highly regarded collection catalog, This Bountiful Place: Art About Agriculture, The Permanent Collection (Oregon Historical Society Press, 2006).  She is also an accomplished photographer and founding member of the Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild.  Shelley Curtis earned an MA and MFA from the University of Iowa.

Bill Marshall studied sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking at Glendale Community College, painting and printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute, and sculpture at the College of Marin. He became a full-time professional artist in the early 1970s exhibiting in galleries in San Francisco, and Portland. After moving to Albany in 1983, Bill pursued a career in horticulture and landscape design.  He applied his artistic disciplines to building gardens for commercial, and private properties throughout the Willamette Valley.  Now, after retiring, he has much more time to devote to his artwork, showing in local galleries, and participating in juried exhibits. Bill began participating in the Art About Agriculture exhibit in 1986, and won a cash award that year for his watercolor, Nine Sheep.  He also won Art About Agriculture purchase awards for Blue Border, 1987, and PLEASE DON’T LEAVE MONEY, 2022.  Bill is an exhibiting member of the Gallery Calapooia in Albany, Oregon, and has ongoing exhibits at the Albany Public Library.

Conrad J. (Bud) Weiser is Dean Emeritus of the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences (1991-1994) and former research scientist and educator in biology, horticulture, and agriculture.  Now a successful artist, Bud Weiser’s stone sculptures and bonsai trees are widely exhibited and collected.
